I suspect that I am no different from a lot of folks this time of year who reflect on past Christmas'. Like many people, my family didn't have that much. We lived in a rent house most of my childhood with no central heat or air, out in the country on a hill in south-central Texas. Summers were blazing hot and winters were almost unbearably cold. We shut the entire north side of the house off during winter and our family of five lived in 2 rooms plus the kitchen and bathroom. Still, I remember being incredibly thankful for that feeling of standing in front of our propane ceramic block heater 'til my skin felt like it was going to burn off and then jumping in my bed not daring to move a muscle until all the warmth was gone.
At Christmas, our family always had a live tree. When I was 8 years old, we moved from the trailer house that sat on the same property as my Grandparents place to that farmhouse on the hill. It sat on 272 acres that our landlord, Kenneth Riddle gave us free run on. We could walk the pastures and fish in the tanks (ponds) and become friendly with the many cows he kept on the property. It was just about perfect except for one thing - there wasn't a cedar tree to be found on the whole place. Meanwhile, the land across the road was thick with them. My daddy called up the owner of that property, Jigger Alexander, and asked him if he'd let us cut a tree off it for Christmas and Mr. Alexander was more than happy to oblige.
Now I don't recall why, but Daddy thought it would be fun to pretend to be cat burglars when getting our tree. So Daddy and I (Mama stayed home with my brother Jonathan who was only 2 at the time) dressed in all black and snuck down our very long dirt road with only a hacksaw and a single flashlight in hand - which of course would only be used in the event of a dire emergency. The rule was that we would travel by the moonlight and if a car happened to come down the main road, we were to drop immediately to our bellies and hide. Of course, out there, 12 miles from town, that almost never happened in all the years we did this. We would then carefully walk across the cattle guard at the end of our drive - which terrified me in the daylight - run across the blacktop road, and make our way to Mr. Alexander's property filled with cedar trees. Daddy would locate the barbed wire fence, find a section that was loose enough to stretch just a bit and direct me to crawl through. And I did, catching my coat or pants leg every time! Still, the flashlight was never used. Then, we'd weave our way through the mesquite brush, a few prickly pear plants, and find a cedar tree that appeared in the dark to be just the right size. Then, and only then, would Daddy turn the flashlight on the base of the tree to see where to start cutting then he'd quickly turn it off. And he'd go to work with the hacksaw, with a blade that was always dull, and work and work and work until the tree fell to the ground. If getting the perfect tree wasn't hard enough, the trip back home dragging it across the mesquite brush, prickly pair and hoisting it over the barbed wire fence, certainly was.
The real fun was when we arrived back home with it, seeing it in the light of an unshaded single 100-watt bulb hanging from the ceiling. Sometimes it was the most perfect, full, A-shaped tree you'd ever see. More often, though, it was spindly and crooked with plenty of bare limbs. But regardless, in my eyes, it was the most beautiful Christmas tree I ever had. Every time!
This tradition carried on as long as we lived at that house. Jonathan soon was old enough to join us which meant Mama could go, although she sometimes opted to stay home, and my youngest brother, Jeffrey, came along and was able to join in, too. I missed the last couple years of this tradition when I moved away from home and eventually made my way to Tennessee but the memory of it never left me. I longed to find a place where I could relive this adventure. It wasn't until I met my future husband in 1995, and shared with him this great tale, that it happened again. Blake's Daddy had been raised on a piece of property in White County, Tennessee, just outside of Sparta and Blake had not been to visit it in years. His Daddy had moved from that land back in the 50's so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to go back, find a tree, and relive part of my childhood with the man I would soon marry. So we did. It wasn't the same. But, it made me fall in love with Blake more because he understood what it meant to me. We drug that tree back to my apartment in Nashville and placed it in front of my patio door. We decorated it and although you could see the light all the way through, it was the most beautiful Christmas tree I ever had.
Time moved on and the reality hit that because of our travels, having a live tree wasn't the safest option for us any longer. So about 8 years ago, Blake and I went to Lowes and I bought my first ever artificial tree. I stood there in that store and sobbed like a child.
Last year, on the way home from church, Blake took an unexpected detour and found a fencerow on a backroad that was lined with cedar bushes. He pulled over and before I realized what was happening, he jumped out of the truck, reached in the bed for a pair of loppers, cut a cedar tree and threw it in the truck. I was so surprised and so touched by that gesture. I placed it on our front porch in a big 5 gallon crock and wrapped it in lights, burlap and berries from our Nandina. It was the most beautiful Christmas tree I ever had.

Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers Present Donations to the Patriot Guard Riders™, Guitars for Vets During Southern Ohio Indoor Music Festiva
Wilmington, OH (November 10, 2014)—Award-winning bluegrass group Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers made two charitable donations this past weekend to veterans-related organizations during their twice-annual Southern Ohio Indoor Music Festival held at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington.
During their Saturday afternoon appearance, the band performed "The Last Parade," a powerful song written by Steve Bonafel in honor of Staff Sgt. Nicholas Carnes of Dayton, Kentucky, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2007. Immediately following, Mullins introduced Robert Woods, the Ohio State Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders™, a support group of motorcycle riders accessible in all 50 states, available at a family’s request, to honor and ensure dignity and respect at memorial services honoring fallen military heroes, first responders, and honorably discharged veterans. The band presented him with a check for $3,000. The contribution was made possible through proceeds from the digital downloads of "The Last Parade" along with sales of a commemorative t-shirt donated by Buckminn’s D&D Harley-Davidson located in Xenia, OH.
“Our sincere thanks go to ALL who have contributed to our efforts assisting the Patriot Guard Riders," states Joe Mullins. "Each time we have performed 'The Last Parade' for audiences this year, we have dedicated the song to the fallen heroes who have given all to serve our country and communities. The Patriot Guard Riders assist hundreds of families each week, nationwide, with such passion and dignity. And it was very moving to find out that Captain Bob Woods, who accepted the donation, actually assisted in the procession the song is about, for Staff Sgt. Nicholas Carnes – powerful.”
“The healing power of music is well known in the bluegrass community," explains Mullins. "For our fans to contribute several hundred dollars to Guitars for Vets confirms this and I know funds will provide opportunity for lives and hearts to be restored from the traumas of the battlefield. What could be better? And we are very grateful for the generosity of our friend Wilma Miller and Janet Davis Acoustic Music. The Thompson family of JDAM eagerly supports our charitable efforts at the festival each November. What a blessing.”

Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers Share Philanthropic Efforts with Patriot Guard Riders™, Guitars for Vets
The Southern Ohio Indoor Music Festival (SOIMF) will take place this weekend, November 7th & 8th, at the Roberts Centre in Wilmington, and will celebrate the best in bluegrass music as well as a six-month long philanthropic effort by festival hosts, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers.
Celebrating the release of their newest Rebel Records CD, Another Day From Life, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers debuted the first single, "The Last Parade,"at the Grand Ole Opry in May. "The Last Parade" is a powerful song written by Steve Bonafel in honor of Sgt. Nickolas Carnes of Dayton, Kentucky, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2007. Following a standing ovation from a crowd of several thousand, Mullins announced a campaign to donate 100% of the proceeds from the digital download of their new single through November 6th to the Patriot Guard Riders™, a support group of motorcycle riders accessible in all 50 states, available at a family’s request, to honor and ensure dignity and respect at memorial services honoring fallen military heroes, first responders, and honorably discharged veterans.
In addition, the band and their official supply sponsor, Janet Davis Acoustic Music, along with a friend to bluegrass music and our veterans, Wilma Miller of Cedarville, Ohio, will collaborate at SOIMF to support the Cincinnati, Ohio Chapter of Guitars for Vets (G4V), a non-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of injured and ailing veterans through the healing power of music with free guitar lessons to vets in a structured program staffed by volunteers. Janet Davis Acoustic Music has donated a Martin guitar valued at over $1,200 and Wilma Miller has donated a patriotic-themed handmade quilt. A $5 donation per prize will allow festival attendees to enter a drawing to win either item with all proceeds given to G4V. Presentations to representatives of the Patriot Guard Riders and Guitars for Vets will take place at the event on Saturday, November 8th.
Festival doors open Friday, November 7th, at 10 A.M., with performances by host band, Joe Mullins & the Radio Ramblers, Ralph Stanley II, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Bill Yates & the Country Gentlemen Tribute Band, and a special appearance by Marty Raybon who has just been added to the lineup.
The award-winning talent continues on Saturday, November 8th, with performances by 2014 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Emerging Artist of the Year winner Flatt Lonesome. “The past few years have seen a wealth of fantastic, young talent in bluegrass," states festival producer Joe Mullins. "The sibling harmony and professionalism of Flatt Lonesome has made them award winners!" Saturday also includes shows by Special Consensus who were honored at this year's IBMA Awards for selections from their Country Boy – A Bluegrass Tribute to John Denver album. “Special Consensus has a great history, entertaining nationally now for a few decades after being founded as Chicago’s first great bluegrass act. Their John Denver tribute has been a huge success and they are enjoying a tremendous year,” says Mullins.

Sparta, Tennessee, Hometown of Lester Flatt, Honors Legendary Musician with Historical Marker
Bluegrass and Country music legend, Lester Flatt, was honored in his hometown of Sparta, Tennessee recently when city and county officials joined forces to unveil an historical marker in his honor during Sparta's annual event, Liberty Square: A Lester Flatt Celebration.
Plans for the marker began nearly 18 months ago when Sparta residents, Blake and Kimberly Williams presented the idea at a White County Commissioners meeting to have a marker placed at Oaklawn Cemetery where Flatt is buried. "Lester was a very humble man and when he passed away, he didn't want a lot of attention," explains Blake Williams, who is a former member of Flatt's band, the Nashville Grass, and was also a pallbearer at Flatt's funeral. "Kimberly and I have talked to many people who worked with Lester over the years and also to his family, and we've all felt the same way—that we wanted to do something in his honor. Since he would have been 100 years old in June of this year, it just made sense to do it now."
The commissioners agreed and voted unanimously to pass the budget for the marker. Sparta's Mayor, Jeff Young, was at the meeting and without hesitation volunteered to pay for half the cost and offered any assistance needed to see the project through. "With the green light from both city and county officials in place, Kimberly began the legwork that involved working with the officials, tasking music journalist Barry Mazor, with the text for the marker and enlisting the help of W.D. Stone & Associates on a design."
The historical marker was unveiled during the city's annual event, named for Flatt, on Saturday, October 11th. "We've been producing 'Liberty Square: A Lester Flatt Celebration' for well over a decade now and were thrilled to be able to commemorate Lester Flatt's 100 years in bluegrass with this marker and some very special guests," states Sparta Mayor, Jeff Young. The 45-minute ceremony included a special music presentation by Blake Williams who enlisted the help of another Nashville Grass alumni, Roland White, as well as Michael Cleveland, Wayne Southards, Dwayne Anderson and a guest appearance by Darin Aldridge. Tennessee State Representative Paul Bailey presented a proclamation on behalf of the State of Tennessee honoring Flatt's contributions to bluegrass and country music and Kyle Cantrell, former Grand Ole Opry announcer and current program director for SiriusXM Bluegrass Junction, spoke on Flatt's impact on him personally and professionally. In attendance and recognized during the ceremony were Flatt's granddaughter Tammy Brumfield and her husband Mike; Don Clark, owner of the Bluegrass Bus Museum; Danny Clark, an International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Board member; Joe Lurgio, IBMA staff member; Ashlee-Jean Trott, associate producer of Music City Roots; Ray Seckler representing his father Curly Seckler; and White County Executive Denny Wayne Robinson.
The historical marker will be placed at Oaklawn Cemetery located on Hwy 70 just outside of Sparta, TN in the next few weeks.

Our deepest condolences go to our musical brother, Wayne Benson, on the loss of his father just last weekend. Wayne asked that we extend his thanks to all of you for the phone calls, messages and prayers for he and his family during their loss.
We'd like to thank Kevin McKinnon and Adam Steffey for filling in for Wayne. Both men did a fantastic job and we truly appreciate it! Here's a video from our show in Milan, MI with our guest, Adam Steffey.
